FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Helendale, CA – November 21, 2011 –

The Ayden Rae Foundation launched the Ayden Rae Foundation website, an invaluable resource for pregnant mothers dealing with Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG). The Ayden Rae Foundation website features informational documents, photo, and video galleries helping to raise awareness of HG, support information for those dealing with HG, as well as fund raising information to support efforts in advocating and improving patient care for HG patients, education, research, and reaching populations at risk from Hyperemesis Gravidarum.

The website, located at www.aydenraefoundation.org, was designed and deployed by DKM Studios, a client-centric organization specializing in IT consulting services and web development.

About the Ayden Rae Foundation

Mission: The Ayden Rae Foundation provides support for life-saving efforts in advocating and improving patient care for HG patients, education, research, and reaching populations at risk from Hyperemesis Gravidarum.

Vanessa Pack, Founder & Chief Executive Officer

With a lifelong dream of being an educator, Vanessa was well along the path towards realizing her goal having completed an Associate of Arts in Natural Science, Associate of Science in Social Science, Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies, and over two thirds complete in her Master of Education, Adult Educators and Administrators.

Close to the culmination of the education required to reach her goal of a teaching career geared towards K-12, Vanessa realized a difficult decision was required. She asked herself, “Do I continue on with my dream of being a teacher, or focus on saving mothers and babies by helping to discover a cause and cure for Hyperemesis Gravidarum?”

Vanessa had been a volunteer fund raiser for the Hyperemesis Education and Research Foundation [HER] and she realized that there were limited options available when fund raising as a volunteer. The Packs decided the best option was to create their own foundation; one that would support all organizations that were seeking to discover a cause and cure for HG. The Packs held the first ever Hyperemesis Gravidarum walk October 20, 2007; A Walk to Remember; HG Walk America, raising awareness in the community and gaining much needed support for those who suffer from this disorder. Donating the proceeds of the walk to the HER foundation, Vanessa continues with the completion of her Masters (2012), and the Ayden Rae Foundation was born.

With the creation of the Ayden Rae Foundation, Vanessa and Perry are able to focus their efforts to bring awareness about Hyperemesis Gravidarum through education and support. The Pack’s have set a challenging goal to raise $2.5 million dollars by June 12, 2013 with that funding to be used for research to save the lives of Hyperemesis Gravidarum mothers and their babies.

For additional information please visit the Ayden Rae Foundation, www.aydenraefoundation.org

Perry Pack, Founder & Chief Financial Officer

Ayden Rae Foundation founder and Chief Financial Officer Perry Pack is a father, husband, and Hyperemesis Gravidarum advocate. Before he and Vanessa married she explained to him that she had ‘complicated’ pregnancies. Perry could have never imagined what exactly complicated meant!

“Until you are staring Hyperemesis Gravidarum in the eye, living it, there is no way to explain or even prepare for it. I was on the sidelines watching my wife and unborn baby die in our home. Feeling like my hands were handcuffed behind my back, I might as well have been in prison. I felt powerless and wished I could have somehow taken her place. Surviving HG with my wife was the turning point in my life. Surviving HG without Ayden Rae has been a difficult experience, one I’d keep other fathers from having.”

Since 1993 Perry has worked as a Northrop Grumman civilian contractor for the DOD based at Ft. Irwin, the US Army’s premier National Training Center [NTC]. As a master mechanic focused on the operational performance and repair of the Army’s HMMWV and MRAP vehicles, Perry, currently working towards a Master of Science in Project Management, is leveraging his professional experience and knowledge to provide a sound operational base for The Ayden Rae Foundation. He and his wife are looking forward to supporting families with this affliction until there is a cause and cure for HG.

Alice’s auxiliary career as a public school parent began in August 1990 when Sam entered kindergarten and ended in June 2006 when Frederick graduated from high school. Three boys x 13 years of school = a lot of time and a lot of teachers. She is grateful to everyone who helped her boys on their journey through public education. The teachers the boys selected as their Most Memorable Teachers are Nancy (Portman) Grogan, Karen Kreigsman, and Joe Russo. A special thanks to them.

Most recently, she began a two-year term as a Mountain Regional Representative for NCSPA. Alice was awarded a NCSPA Presidential Award of Honor in 2002 for her advocacy on behalf of children.

Alice loves public schools, she loves being a school psychologist, and she loves being a mother. How lucky can you be?

Systems Life-Cycle

Every small business owner faces the challenge of Systems Life-Cycle. All of us attempt to squeeze every penny from our IT infrastructure, often times in ways that exceed responsible return on investment and can actually have a negative impact on our business.

As we move in to 2011, and for many First Quarter, a quick review of Systems Life-Cycle goals is prudent before expending capital budget for new equipment.

Those familiar with PMI standards will recognize the SDLC waterfall. System Development Life Cycle [SDLC] is a graphic representation of the process businesses use to refresh their equipment.

Business owners need to evaluate the actual cost of ownership for their equipment. The cost of purchasing a desktop PC may be only $1,200, but, kept for four years, the total cost of ownership (TCO) could be as much as $5,867 per year, according to Gartner, Inc. However, if the company’s PCs are well managed, the cost per PC per year can be 42 percent lower at $3,413.1

“The emergence of alternative client architectures provides the opportunity to reduce client computing TCO, but requires new measurement methodologies to evaluate them,” said Michael Silver, research vice president at Gartner: “Organizations should select the right technology for their users based on need and should consider TCO as one criterion. Complexity is an issue that organizations need to keep in mind as they select their computing models and devices. Too many architectures could increase TCO, especially in smaller organizations.”1

A quick review of industry standard life-cycle expectations is a helpful baseline when evaluating the need to refresh your office systems.

Desktop Hardware

This category encompasses all PC and MAC desktop and laptop systems and includes the CPU and monitor as a single combined unit. In addition PC servers also fall under this life cycle range. The industry standard now projects a 3 year useful life for PCs.

2 – 3 years

Network Hardware and Desktop Peripherals

These two categories are distinctly different in function but are grouped together here based on a similar expected life cycle. Network hardware includes repeaters, routers, switches and other communication devices that are used to connect desktop systems to the network. Desktop peripherals include: printers, scanners and other media equipment such as laserdiscs or VCR.

4 – 6 years

Cable Plant and Physical Infrastructure

The copper and fiber optic wires that connect data stations together and comprise your network infrastructure are the components identified in this last category.

8 – 10 years

An important consideration when refreshing your office: can this hardware be repurposed? An example of repurposing would be the desktop computer purchased in 2006 for $1,500. The unit included a CRT monitor, runs Windows XP, service pack 3, with MS Office 2003. That computer is most likely a 1.8 gHz processor that has been upgraded to 1 GB of RAM and a 20GB hard drive. It is also the most likely source of frustration during your business day.

Instead of spending another almost $2,200 for a new PC (without monitor) and updated office software, consider updating the current unit. The old PC has the hard drive memory, processing and RAM capability to be wiped and installed with Windows 7 and Office 2010. A capital outlay of approx $640 vs. the $2,200 for a completely new system (without monitor). To add a flat screen monitor , update your capital expense to approx. $900.

There are technology updates that are impacted by this type of repurpose. An example would be and older system with hardware USB 1 ports vs. the faster USB 2 ports on systems today. There are benefits and drawbacks, but for the small business looking to remain competitive and updated while pinching pennies, an operating system install is often a less expensive investment that can extend PC life by another 2-3 years.

If your business drivers require completely new systems, order them directly from the manufacturer. It is much less expensive to custom build and have shipped a new desktop system than to buy one at a big box store.

All computer manufacturers have the ability to custom build and order systems from the web. Recently I assisted a client with a systems refresh. Ordering custom built systems directly from Dell saved the client $3,200 over purchasing the same systems sold at a big box store. Another plus to custom builds: the new computer only has the software chosen during the build with no additional trial software (bloatware) to clog up your system.

Whether custom ordering or repurposing, there are several options available to small business owners that can deliver a greater return on investment than that trip down to the big box electronic store.

CRT vs LCD Monitors.

If you have not already done so, replace your old tube-style monitors (called a cathode ray tube or CRT) with a flat-panel liquid crystal display (LCD), like those on laptop computers.

CRT monitors are those bulky, tube-television looking monstrosities that steal desk space have been proven to cause Computer Vision Syndrome. (CVS) is a very real problem for many people who spend hours daily in front of a computer screen.

According to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) nearly 88 percent of all CRT monitor users will develop CVS at some time in their lives. Eyestrain is the number one complaint of office workers, with the more time spent working at a computer, the more likely the report of problems with eyestrain. Operating a CRT will lead to visual, muscular, and mental fatigue, loss of productivity, and cause some people to need corrective lenses to avoid eyestrain and headaches.

LCD screens are easier on the eyes and usually have an anti-reflective surface. Old fashioned CRT screens can cause a noticeable “flicker” of images on the screen, which is a major cause of computer eye strain. Even if this flicker is imperceptible, it still can contribute to eye strain and fatigue during computer work.

Flicker is not an issue with LCD screens, since the brightness of pixels on the display are controlled by a “backlight” that typically operates at 200 Hz. If you see a lower refresh rate (e.g. 60 Hz) noted on an LCD screen, don’t worry — this refers to how often a new image is received from the video card, not how often the pixel brightness of the display is updated, and this function typically is not associated with eye strain.

Finally, choose a relatively large display. For a desktop computer, select a display that has a diagonal screen size of at least 19 inches or greater.

For more information on CVS visit the American Optometric Association’s website, www.aoa.org.

1Taken from Gartner Report: Desktop Total Cost of Ownership. The Gartner Group, Gartner, Inc. (NYSE: IT), is the world’s leading information technology research and advisory company. Gartner delivers the technology-related insight necessary for its clients to make the right decisions, every day.

I enjoy watching Warner Brothers cartoons circa 1938-1945, especially those where Bugs completely baffles Daffy Duck or Elmer Fudd. A relevant image conjured from those bygone days is when Bugs has pulled a fast one on Daffy or Elmer and they morph in to a full sized lollipop emblazoned with “SUCKER.” Unfortunately this is also how many in the Internet industry may see you. My mental image of this type of individual is that of the wolf with big flashing dollar-sign eyes as the human sized lollipop walks in his office door.

The average consumer (you) apparently believes that the IT professional (me) is similar to the alchemist of the dark ages. Someone sequestered in a dimly lit room surrounded by mysterious tomes of lore and strange baubles and bottles…a person with secretive knowledge only available to those that have dedicated their lives to an study most people would find impossible to comprehend.

I do have a crystal ball, an inside joke gift from a division VP when I was a Senior Forecaster with General Motors C.A.R.S. at the Ren Cen in Detroit. Other than that, clients that visit our office are surprised to see a brightly lit, ordered work space with white boards and workstations. We don’t have any mysterious tomes and not one tallow dribbled candle stuck on the top of a skull.

Some IT professionals appear to nurture this “alchemist” belief; what the consumer does not understand they are most likely to pay more for. It has been three years since I presented similar information at a Chamber luncheon in September 2007, and based on several conversations in the last few weeks our membership needs an update on the pratfalls of an online presence.

Beware the Bundle

We derive a significant amount of business from clients escaping the Bundle. The bundle is a package offered by major online marketing organizations like Dex, Domain.com, Execusite, GoDaddy, Intuit, Yahoo Small Business, YellowBook, and ect.

While the first glance appeal of having your business backed up by the “easy to manage website,” “search tools,” and “search listings,” offered by these bundled services can be powerful, in the long run they do not provide the return on investment you were hoping for. The significant downsides to the bundle are additional charges and the lack of manageability and ownership inherent in a managed service. When you register a domain name (yourbusiness.com) you own that name for the registration period. No other entity can utilize that name. When you purchase a hosting package from a web host you have 100% ownership of the name and 100% ability to manage that name, your online business portal, the way you want. Bundled packages remove that ability and place the ownership and management with the provider.

With a bundled package you choose your website from one of their pre-designed cookie cutter templates. The cookie cutter templates provide almost no ability to modify the format to suit your specific business without expensive upgrade fees. Moreover with these types of packages you do not own your domain name. Should you find (as most businesses eventually do) that the bundled website is not delivering an ROI you are charged an exorbitant fee to purchase the domain from the provider. Where you could have purchased the domain on your own for between $10 and $15 it will cost you between $100 and $300 to purchase it way from a bundled provider. The costs of the bundle are significant in both the short and long term. Bundled websites cost between $50 and $300 to set up, then an additional $50 and $300 each month. The average monthly cost is around $100. That’s about $1,200 annually for a cookie cutter template with limited ability to customize. These bundled sites require you to pay additional charges for everything beyond the basic template and does not include email…that’s another $30-$50 a month on top of everything else.

Using one of our clients, a CPA from California, as an example of bundle vs. non-bundle: Before changing to a turnkey solution this client was using Execusite bundled services. Unfortunately a majority of CPAs also use the same service. During one development meeting a Google search revealed that over 500 CPA firms were using the exact same template (website) as my new client. In our local market a three Vancouver CPAs had the same website as my client right down to the tag line of “Your success is our business.”

Bundled Solution (Before): Cookie cutter template that looks like 500+ other CPA office websites.

Turnkey Solution (After): Uniquely fit to, and managed by, client with no additional up-charging.

The non-bundled turnkey solution this client chose allows elsinorecpa.com to own, completely customize and real time manage the content for their business with no additional charges for email, administration, content updates, ties to social networking tools like Facebook and Twitter, web performance metric statistical reports, or other services. All at about a third of the annual cost of the average $1,200 bundled website template. While bundles may appear to be a cost effective way to deliver ROI be sure to research the service providers offerings in depth. Lack of due diligence will cost you.

While the bundle is appealing when viewing at the overall advertising packages available from directory services be sure to research both custom and turnkey design and deployment costs with the web design firms in SW Washington. You’re business stays local raising both accountability and support, and you will most likely find a better return on investment.

Wolf Warning: don’t fall for the social networking fees

Whether you have a bundled, custom, or turnkey website, beware the Social Network connection fee. During a conversation at the August After Hours I heard from a dissatisfied chamber member that their provider was charging upwards of $300 to ‘tie’ their bundled website to Facebook. This is another example of lack of information costing your business. Social Networking websites have pre-built tools that allow you to connect your website to their website. By pre-built I mean free. Let me repeat that: FREE.

A designer may need to create branded content to bring your corporate identity to your Facebook or Twitter profile, but the hard bits of coding to tie between your website and the social networking sites are available FOR FREE to everyone.

Again, there may be some cost for the designer to brand and set up the profile; if you have an IT professional advising you that there will be a significant cost to connect your website to any social networking portal you should run, not walk, from their office.

They are a wolf with big dollar signs for eyes, and you look like a human sized lollipop to them…

Small business owners feel the pinch of start up and ongoing operational costs. No matter the product or service offering, the small business faces challenges from the moment the entrepreneur moves their business vision from dream to reality.

One of the most significant challenges facing start-up businesses relates to brand or business identity. A brand, the business’s identity, is not just a logo or typeface. A brand represents the businesses identity through the use of color, shape, and text.

The best brands inspire admiration, recognition, and trust for a company; a way to identify the organization through a logo or logotype that positively ties emotionally to a customer base.

The challenge facing the start-up: most entrepreneurs do not have the years of education and practical experience in graphics design to create a viable identity from scratch. All start-ups have been there, cobbling together something just to get the doors open and the customer’s coming in. Yet, in most cases something is found to be good enough for Now, and now can last a long, long time.

Creating or updating a business identity

Most new and small businesses struggle with branding, whether they are DIY or need to communicate their vision to a designer.

First and foremost, if your customer base can not explain your brand in a sentence or less you need to revisit your branding design.

There are four basic rules to identity: a logo must be describable, effective in grayscale, be memorable, and be scalable.

Here is an example using the Woodland Chamber of Commerce brand identity.

Two often overlooked rules are greyscale and scalability. Sure, that business identity may fantastic on that 6′ x 2′ sign on the building. How does it appear when scaled down for business cards and letterhead ?

Once the basic rules are understood it is time to throw darts at the board. Brainstorming and research for branding require just as much due diligence as a business plan does. Great examples of this are illustrated below.

I guarantee you that Mont-Sat, the company identified by that last logo, was thinking, “good enough for Now.” Annually the design world holds national contests focused on poor logo design. Mono-Sat has been awarded both Most Phallic and Worst Logo. Unfortunately, these are not awards that a business owner seeks.

After being notified of their awards Mont-Sat updated their brand.

Remember that business identity doesn’t need to graphically say what your company does. The Ford logo is not an automobile, and the Nike logo is not a shoe. Yes, a designer can incorporate relevant symbology in to branding, but it is not strictly necessary.

Conversely, not all business identities require graphic based logos. In some cases a professional logotype may work better for your business than a graphically driven identity. The Bill Hager & Associates brand is an excellent example of this methodology:

If you have questions about business identity please contact us, or speak with us at the weekly Woodland Chamber of Commerce luncheon, weekly No Frills Networking meetings, the monthly Kalama Chamber of Commerce luncheon, or the monthly Chamber of Commerce After Hours events.

In today’s world a website is a business essential. A website provides customers a chance to ‘discover’ you, because it’s the place people go to research and compare businesses and its products or services. Technically, your business will not fail just because you are not on the web, however, if your customers are unable to quickly find detailed information about your product or services offerings on the web it can negatively impact your bottom line.

It is important to remember that being on the web is not just about selling more. A web presence allows you to retain current customers, and as any marketing expert will tell you; retaining current customers is significantly less expensive than obtaining new ones.

You may feel you have all the customers you need, or that your business niche is too small to require a web presence. Remember that the largest lead generator for your business is word of mouth. Utilizing social media applications ads an almost real time online ability to leverage that word of mouth from your satisfied customer base.

Your best investment ever?

The first question we receive, more of a statement really, is, “My business can’t afford a website.” Instead, customers choose out-of-the-box turn key websites from directory services like GoDaddy, Intuit, or Yellowbook. We understand the draw of these bundled packages. As business owners the less we spend on marketing the better our books look.

Unfortunately, like most things in life, you get what you pay for. Do these template out-of-the-box websites provide a viable ROI for the limited investment? No. Does your web presence have to be expensive? No.

Yes, you will have to spend some money, but it is one of the best investments you will ever make. You will have to budget for a once-off web design fee and then a monthly web-hosting fee, but in return you get a permanent yet flexible marketing tool. Compare your web costs to what you would pay for a few radio spots (and who knows if anyone will hear it or had enough time to write down your phone number!) or a once-off newspaper ad (once it’s gone, it’s gone!) and even if you use newspaper advertising wisely, repetitive advertising will cost a lot more than your website.

Return on investment

For those who are into numbers, check out http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats.htm

For a more qualitative assessment, let’s weigh the pros and cons of having a website, starting with the benefits of course:

A website defies geography. No matter where your clients are, they can reach you.

It is tireless and works like a dog – 24/7, 365 days of the year.

It lets your customers in: You can use your website to ask customers for their opinions, while you can blog about your latest and greatest product.

It respects your pocket. It is cheaper and far more flexible than other advertising mediums, and changing its looks doesn’t involve a long-winded production process.

It saves trees. Although it is always a good idea to augment a good website with other marketing tools, it does cut down the need for more traditional marketing like printing large volumes of literature.

It is everyone’s friend. People can shop and compare without having to find parking at five different stores while trying to keep the kids to stay calm!

As for the disadvantages: Apparently there are none really. But don’t take our word for it; google it, and see for yourself!

Do not try this at home

So we have pretty much established that businesses and websites are apples and oranges.

But there is an important caveat: When it comes to your web presence, less isn’t more. And just any old website will not do. Your site IS your business. It reflects your image and your brand and tells your customers who you are, what you do, and what you sell. It must look good, grab attention and entice people. If it is badly designed and hard to navigate, if the writing is bad or the colors clash, it is not going to do you any favors. Remember, you are on the web to charm and disarm not to disturb and perturb!

So once you have decided to invest in a website, follow up this wise business decision with a commitment to hire a professional. You want your website to be a true reflection of the passion and pride you feel for you business. Nothing less will do.
